Gastrointestinal health

Gastroenterology

A gastroenterologist is a doctor who's an expert in everything to do with our digestive system. This includes our stomach, liver, intestines, and other parts that help break down the food we eat and turn it into energy. If you've ever had a stomachache that won't go away, heartburn, or problems going to the bathroom, this is the kind of doctor you'd want to see.

They can help diagnose and treat things like ulcers (sores in your stomach or small intestine), acid reflux (when stomach acid goes back up into your throat), liver diseases, and even do colonoscopies to check for colon cancer. They help people who just have an upset stomach now and then, and those with serious, long-term problems.

As a patient, to ensure you're getting the best care, always share all your symptoms, even if you think they might not be important. Tell the doctor about any medications or supplements you're taking. If they suggest tests or treatments and you're unsure or worried, ask questions. Understand why a test is being done and what the results could mean. If they prescribe medicine, make sure you know how and when to take it and if there are any side effects to watch out for. Your health and comfort are top priorities, so always speak up if something doesn't feel right.
